Delhi Wakes Up to Toxic Smog After Celebrations

On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" range.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of the city showed an AQI above 500, which represents ten times the healthy limit established by the global health authority.

Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, representing fifteen to twenty times exceeding acceptable standards.

Fireworks Restrictions and Current Changes

For the past four years, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous haze that blankets the city as winter begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current regional leadership appealed to the highest court to propose a easing of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Court Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judges agreed to the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during limited time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Many recording stations throughout the city registered air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to extremely hazardous levels recorded during the festival in at least the past three years.

International Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also triggered a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on contaminants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in the capital have remained as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

During Diwali, the amount of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak records ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Contamination Sources

This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in nearby regions of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, farmers illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating toxic pollution that becomes contained over the city as cooler air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Impact

The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous research.

This pollution leads to increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can result in cancer.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely deaths annually in the city.
