Per data from Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have perished while detained since October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has indicated that the actual figure is probably substantially higher, due to many of unaccounted for detainees in Gaza.

Report Findings

A new investigation tracked deaths resulting from physical violence, medical neglect, and inadequate nutrition. Investigators employed transparency petitions, medical examiner documents, and testimonies with attorneys, advocates, family members, and observers.

Official sources provided comprehensive statistics only for the initial 240 days of the war. During this time, reported numbers show an unprecedented fatality rate among detained Palestinians, amounting to a life lost each 96 hours.

Recent Figures

The military finalized records on detention fatalities for May 2024, and the prison service by September 2024. Researchers identified another 35 deaths in confinement following these periods and confirmed them with government bodies.

Even with the aggregate figure of casualties charted being substantially larger than previous assessments, it probably fails to capture the full scale of Palestinian loss, per the leader of the prisoner monitoring division.

“While we are presenting proof for a greater figure of fatalities than earlier indicated, this is an incomplete account,” he stated. “We are certain that there are yet individuals who perished in custody that we have not identified.”

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Confidential government records indicates that the vast majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who lost their lives in jail were non-combatants, based on a simultaneous examination.

By May of 2024, a defense forces registry monitoring all combatants in Gaza, a roster of in excess of 47,000 identified persons, listed only 21 deaths in detention. By that point, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in prison.

Prison Situation

High-Profile Cases

Several casualties in custody have been publicly known, such as a 50-year-old healthcare leader who lost his life in prison after a third of a year in confinement.

A prisoner detained alongside the deceased stated that he was taken to the exercise area by prison staff just prior to his passing, obviously hurt and exposed from the hips downward. His remains remains unreleased to Gaza.

Additional detainees who died in Israeli custody are unidentified. Correctional authorities and defense forces supplied researchers with the number of fatalities in custody, and basic other details for example the facility where they lost their lives, but not the prisoners’ names.
